Blog Title: What to Wear for Your Photoshoot: The Ultimate Guide for Timeless, Beautiful Photos
Planning your photo session and feeling stuck on what to wear? You’re not alone! One of the most common questions I get from clients is, “What should we wear?” Whether you’re booking a maternity, newborn, milestone, or family session, the right outfits can truly elevate your photos—and help you feel confident and relaxed in front of the camera.
Here’s my go-to guide to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and stand the test of time:
⸻
1. Keep It Neutral & Timeless
Soft, neutral tones like creams, whites, beiges, light greys, blushes, and earthy pastels photograph so beautifully. These colors complement skin tones and my natural editing style, and they help keep the focus on your family and connection—not the clothes.
Avoid: Super bright colors, neon, or loud prints—they tend to distract and can reflect strange colors onto skin.
⸻
2. Texture Is Your Friend
Think cozy knits, soft cottons, lace, gauze, linen… all those yummy textures add visual interest and depth without being too “busy.” Especially in newborn and maternity sessions, these fabrics add a natural softness to the images.
⸻
3. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of all-white shirts and jeans! Instead, choose a coordinating color palette—pick 2-3 complementary tones and mix textures and patterns (gently). For example:
• Mom in a soft oatmeal dress
• Dad in a light grey henley and khakis
• Big sister in a cream ruffle dress
• Newborn wrapped in a light taupe or ivory swaddle
It’s cohesive without being too matchy-matchy!
⸻
4. Dress for Comfort (and Confidence!)
If you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing, it’ll show. Choose outfits you can move in, sit in, and snuggle your little ones in. Bonus tip: long, flowy dresses for moms photograph like a dream—think movement, softness, and elegance.
⸻
5. Let the Little Ones Be Little
For newborns, I’ve got you covered with a full studio wardrobe of wraps, onesies, and accessories in every shade of soft. For toddlers and siblings, keep it simple—classic styles, nothing with logos or cartoon characters. Bare feet are adorable too!
⸻
6. I’m Here to Help You Style It All
One of my favorite parts of the process is helping clients style their sessions. I offer a Client Wardrobe with beautiful options for moms and babies, and I’m always happy to give feedback on your outfit choices. You can even text me outfit pics—I love being part of the prep!
⸻
Bonus: A Few Things to Avoid
❌ Big logos or text on clothing
❌ Loud patterns or stripes
❌ Hats that shadow the face
❌ Shoes that don’t match the vibe (when in doubt—barefoot!)
⸻
Ready to Plan Your Session?
Once your outfits are picked out, everything else falls into place. And remember, you don’t have to do this alone—I’m always here to make sure you feel confident, prepared, and totally photo-ready.
Let’s create something beautiful together! ✨
