How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photography Session: Tips for a Smooth and Stress-Free Experience
Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most beautiful (and exhausting!) moments of life—and I’m honored to capture those sweet first days for your family. Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, a little preparation can go a long way toward making your newborn session relaxed and successful.
I send a prep guide to all of my families before their session, but I wanted to share a few of my top tips here too—especially for all the expecting mamas who are planning ahead!
⸻
1. Nursing Mamas, Watch What You Eat
If you’re breastfeeding, try to avoid spicy foods or anything your baby may be sensitive to for about 24 hours before your session. A gassy or uncomfortable tummy can mean more fussiness and less sleep during the session—and that means fewer cozy, sleepy baby poses. A happy tummy = a happy baby!
⸻
2. Feed Baby Before You Leave
A full tummy is one of the best ways to set us up for success. Feeding your baby right before you leave home helps them feel sleepy and content, especially if the car ride to the studio lulls them to sleep. When you arrive, we can get started right away while baby is still in that dreamy, milk-drunk state.
⸻
3. Dress Baby in Easy Sleepwear
Please bring your little one in a zip-up or button-up sleeper—nothing that goes over the head. This makes it super easy to undress baby without waking them. Bonus points if the sleeper is a little loose to help avoid skin marks that can show in photos!
⸻
4. Don’t Forget the Pacifier
Even if you don’t use one regularly, a pacifier can be a lifesaver during a newborn session. If baby needs a little extra comfort while being posed, it can help them settle faster. If you forget yours, don’t worry—I always have brand new (hospital-grade) pacifiers on hand.
⸻
5. Bring a Bottle If You Can
If possible, bring a bottle of expressed breastmilk or formula. It gives me the option to gently comfort-feed during the session if baby needs a little top-off. It’s totally optional, but can be super helpful!
⸻
6. Expect It to Take Time
Newborn sessions are baby-led and can last anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, depending on how your little one is feeling. I move slowly and patiently to keep baby safe and cozy through every pose. You’re welcome to bring a book, scroll your phone, or even catch a quick nap while I work my magic.
⸻
Final Thoughts:
Your only job on session day is to show up, relax, and enjoy the experience. I’ll take care of the rest. These early days are fleeting, and my goal is to capture them in a way that feels timeless, natural, and full of love.
If you’re expecting and thinking about newborn photos, I’d love to chat! Feel free to reach out with any questions or to book your session in advance—newborn slots fill quickly, especially in the first few weeks after birth.
Can’t wait to meet your little one!
Warmly,
Mandi from Moments Kept Photography
