What If Baby Doesn’t Sleep During Their Newborn Session? Don’t Worry—We’ve Got This!

Let’s be real—newborns are tiny, adorable, unpredictable little humans. And guess what? That’s totally okay! One of the most common questions I get as a newborn photographer is: “What happens if my baby doesn’t sleep?”

Here’s the good news: newborn sessions are completely baby-led. That means we take our time, go with the flow, and adjust to whatever your little one needs that day. Whether they want to snooze peacefully through every pose or stay wide-eyed and curious the whole time, we’re here for it.

Awake Baby? No Problem!

While those dreamy, sleepy poses are always a favorite, awake shots can be just as beautiful and full of personality. If your baby is calm and content, we’ll keep snapping away—those bright eyes and little expressions are absolutely adorable and tell a different kind of sweet story. Some of my favorite images have been from babies who decided they weren’t ready to nap just yet!

We Read the Room 

Every session includes time for feeding, rocking, cuddles, and lots of patience. I’ve seen it all—cluster feeding, diaper explosions, and yes, the occasional stubborn nap strike. It’s all part of the newborn experience, and we roll with it!

But What If Baby Is Having a Rough Day?

On very rare occasions (it hasn’t happened yet in my studio!), a baby may just not be having it—maybe they’re extra fussy, dealing with colic, or just not feeling their best. In those cases, rescheduling is always an option. No stress, no pressure. We want your session to feel special and relaxed, not rushed or forced.

I’ve designed my studio to be a calm, cozy space where both babies and parents can relax. Whether your baby sleeps soundly or keeps those eyes wide open the whole time, I promise we’ll capture beautiful, meaningful memories of your little one just as they are.
